It is about 2 mi (3.2 km) east of highway US 35. Hamlet is now bypassed by highway US 30, about a half mile to the north. In 1926 US 30 was realigned with the Indiana Realignment. The Town of Hamlet was originally on both sides of US 30. The Hamlet post office has been in operation since 1864. Hamlet has received a Dollar General in 2020 and was completed in 2021. Hamlet was named after John Hamlet, who established the town in 1863.
